Meet Dexter
Dexter Fisher brings calm, principled leadership and a collaborative spirit to every decision he makes.
As Commissioner of District Five and Mayor Pro Tem of Athens-Clarke County, he has earned the respect of his colleagues and the trust of the community by working across divisions—political, generational, and economic—to move Athens forward. His record shows a commitment to public safety, youth opportunity, and sound financial stewardship.
Dexter Fisher is a respected leader with deep roots in Athens and over 40 years of dedicated service to the community. He spent 33 years in education administration, most recently serving as Chief of District Services for the Clarke County School District. Before that, he worked for 31 years at the University of Georgia, retiring in 2019 as Director of Facilities Management.
Dexter holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Mars Hill University, where he attended on a football scholarship, and an MBA with a focus in Leadership and Finance from Piedmont College.
He and his wife Audrey live in Athens and are proud parents of three adult children and grandparents to five wonderful grandchildren.
Accomplishments as Commissioner

Led the initiative to invest $3.8 million in youth development and gang prevention through the Boys & Girls Club, resulting in the opening of four new community centers at Athens Housing Authority properties: Parkview, Nellie B, Rocksprings, and Broadacres.

Spearheaded the creation of Athens Achieves, a partnership with the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce that connects business, education, and government to build a skilled local workforce. Voted to approve $2.4 million to launch this transformative program and support local nonprofits serving young people and job seekers.

Voted to fully fund the Real Time Crime Center, a vital ACCPD facility that uses live camera feeds to provide real-time situational awareness—enhancing safety for both residents and officers.
Also voted to increase the Sheriff’s Office budget, ensuring Deputy Sheriffs receive the same starting pay as Athens-Clarke County Police Officers—supporting fairness and retention in law enforcement.

Voted to lower the millage rate for two years providing tax relief while maintaining critical services.
Supported three consecutive balanced budgets, all without raising taxes—demonstrating disciplined, responsible financial leadership.

Continues to build strong relationships with the University of Georgia and Athens Technical College, recognizing the critical role these organizations play in shaping our economy, workforce, and quality of life.

Serves as Mayor Pro Tem, Chair of the Audit Committee, and a member of the Public Safety Civilian Oversight Board (PSCOB)—ensuring transparency, accountability, and a steady voice at the table.
